Armenians in Brussels Commemorated the Genocide
Brussels, 25 April 2012 / Roni Alasor and Fiona Lorin / Ararat News – Publishing (ANP) - Like all the Armenians all over the world, Armenians in Brussels also commemorated the 97th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in the Turkish-Ottoman Empire. Several hundred Armenians attended the religious mass in the Armenian church and the commemoration ceremony in the Hach Kar monument.
Speaking in the commemoration event, Armenian Ambassador to the EU and Benelux Avet Adonts said: “For the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian people, the international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide is a matter of reinstating historic justice”. At the same time the Armenian Ambassador insisted that: “While in the 20-s of the last century, the task in front of our nation and our country was not to die, and to survive, Armenia of today has other tasks. Wide horizons of restoring historical justice, of development, of progress are opened before us”.
Belgian and European politicians also attended the event, among them Isabelle Durant, vice-president of the European Parliament (Ecolo), Viviane Teitelbaum, regional parliamentarian (MR) and former president of the Jewish Laic Community Center, Christos Doulkeridis, State Secretary of the Brussels-Capital Region, responsible for Housing (Ecolo), Armand De Decker, vice-president of the Federal Senat (MR),
Representatives of the Armenian Community in Belgium, also attended the commemoration ceremony, including the Armenian Ambassador to EU Avet Adonts, Der Zadig Avédikian, vicar of the Armenian Catholicossat for Benelux, Michel Mahmourian, Chairman of the Armenian Community in Belgium, representatives of Armenian Tashnagtsutiun, Armenian Democrats, Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) and the European Armenian Federation.
